"Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience."

Nature turns up in the darnedest places. On a bright autumn day, a great blue heron patiently waits for a fish to float by—in Chartiers Creek near the Arch Street Bridge in Carnegie. A huge colony of herons nests in sycamores along Chartiers Creek in Upper St. Clair, and they can often be seen flying up and down the creek's channel, looking vaguely prehistoric with the classic S-curve neck and arched wings. Their return to Chartiers Creek as a nesting ground indicates the increasing health of the creek; the water is clean enough to support adequate numbers of fish species to support an increasing colony of herons.Did you know Pittsburgh is becoming known as one of the country's "greenest" cities? As we consider options for managing stormwater in the Lower Chartiers Watershed, much of what is being planned for the city of Pittsburgh, such as green roofs, solar energy, and greenspace requirements or land conservation for the public good as well as biodiversity can also be considered in our watershed to help alleviate flooding and traffic issues.

WATER FROM THE SKY!!
Rain Barrel Workshops

Those raindrops add up, as we've seen lately in some flooding incidents. While the issue may seem too big for any individual to do something about it, a rain barrel at the end of a residential downspout can make a big difference in the amount of stormwater pouring into Chartiers Creek. Our next will be in February, 2007 in Carnegie. Read about the workshop and contact us.

What North American bird watchers should know about the "bird flu"
From Cornell University's "Project FeederWatch" website: With frequent media coverage raising concerns about avian influenza, the Lab of Ornithology has compiled the following information to help you better understand the virus and assess the threat.

Check the LCWC Calendar to see what's upcoming community and environmental events in and around our watershed.

What is AMD?
Abandoned Mine Drainage is the last major pollutant to foul Chartiers Creek, but there's plenty of it in the creek itself and most of its tributaries. Read about AMD and three local projects to remediate the problem on our AMD page.

Visit your Library Often
The LCWC online library includes articles researched by members of the LCWC about items of interest within the watershed on Agriculture, Ecological Restoration, Historical Resources, Industry, Development, Multi-municipal Cooperation, Recreation and Flora and Fauna with more to come. This page is also your link to information on the site like the topics below, such as feasibility studies, biological data in the watershed and more...read more.

Fish and Wildlife Studies on Chartiers Creek
Occasional studies have been done on Chartiers Creek to catalog the biology in water and on land. Aquatic species are a clear indicator of relative water quality, and certain species are rated intolerant of certain pollution levels and their presence indicates increasingly better water quality...read more.

Taking a Look at the Rivers Conservation Plan for Chartiers Creek
The Rivers Conservation Plan for the Lower Chartiers Creek is a guideline for both remediation and future development within the Chartiers Valley. The document still exists on paper, so only the Executive Summary and a few beginning maps are on the internet, but more of the study will be available when it can be converted to a digital format...read more.

Lower Chartiers Creek Trail and Greenway Feasibility Study
The lower Chartiers Creek valley presents the residents of southwestern Pennsylvania with a wonderful opportunity for an authentic outdoor experience. Although much of the land in the watershed has been impacted by years of industrial activity, wooded hillsides and expansive floodplain open areas abound. It is the goal of this study, and the mission of its sponsors, to construct land and water trails to encourage access to these resources, and to ensure that significant natural areas are afforded protection...read more.

Worried about the rain?

Visit our CreekWatch page for information on weather and how it affects Chartiers Creek.

It's understandable considering the recent events in the watershed, but a little knowledge of the creek, how it's monitored and local weather patterns goes a long way toward relieving some of those worries. Visit LCWC's CreekWatch page for:

  • information on Hurricane Ivan's rainfall and impact
  • links to the USGS gauge on Chartiers Creek, monitored in real time
  • links to the Weather Channel and  Weatherbug for constant real-time weather information
  • links to PEMA and the PA DEP for information from the state

The only thing bad about summer—poison ivy, or anything like it.
"Urushiol Oil" is the active ingredient, and is it potent!

  • Only 1 nanogram (billionth of a gram) needed to cause rash
  • Average is 100 nanograms for most people
  • 1/4 ounce of urushiol is all that is needed to cause a rash in every person on earth

Visit the Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac Information Center for information and remedies!
